Bell P-400 Airacobra WWII USAAF Fighter

Developed as an export variant of the P-39, the American P-400 Airacobra fighter featured a highly unorthodox design for the World War II era. Its defining characteristic was the placement of the engine mid-fuselage, directly behind the cockpit. By locating the powerplant near the aircraft's center of gravity, engineers achieved a significant enhancement in maneuverability. Torque was delivered to the propeller via a long extension shaft, a configuration that cleared the forward fuselage to accommodate a formidable array of weaponry—most notably a 37mm cannon firing directly through the propeller hub. In level flight, the aircraft was capable of reaching speeds up to 400 mph.

Despite these advanced engineering solutions, assessments of the fighter's combat efficacy proved polarizing, largely contingent upon the theater of operations. The aircraft failed to garner favor within the ranks of either the U.S. Army Air Forces or the Royal Air Force. British operational experience with the Airacobra was notably fleeting. Upon entering service in October 1941, the fighters were issued exclusively to No. 601 "City of London" Squadron. Their combat deployment spanned a mere three days, from October 9 to 11, during which four airworthy machines executed just two operational sorties over France. Ultimately, only 80 airframes from the British order were ever assembled.

The destiny of the remaining aircraft from this production lot unfolded quite differently. Approximately two hundred airframes were urgently redirected to the Soviet Union. Operating on the Eastern Front, Soviet aviators held the fighter in high regard, particularly praising its low-altitude performance. The balance of the inventory either remained stateside or was deployed to the Pacific Theater. It was in this theater, operating under the P-400 designation, that the aircraft saw extensive action in the arduous campaigns over New Guinea and Guadalcanal.
