MAP Light Earth Guide:

  • Light Earth is a light sandy brown color adopted by MAP in 1938 for camouflage of RAF aircraft.
  • Light Earth was originally intended to shade the lower wings of RAF biplanes painted according to the Temperate Land scheme. According to this scheme, the lower wings were to be painted in Light Earth and Light Green camouflage. The upper wings and other upper surfaces were to be painted Dark Earth and Dark Green respectively.
  • MAP Light Earth also found its way into the tropical camouflage schemes of RAF aircraft. According to AMO A.520/39, the upper surfaces of RAF desert aircraft were to be painted in Light Earth and Dark Green, while the undersides were to be painted in Sky or Sky Blue. This scheme did not last long, and in December 1940 the upper surfaces of such aircraft were repainted in camouflage featuring Dark Earth and Middle Stone colors.
