Middle Stone
A high-quality semi-gloss RAF Middle Stone acrylic or enamel paint for scale models and historical miniatures.
MAP Mid Stone Guide:
- MAP Middle Stone is a sandy color with a distinct mustard tint that was widely used for desert aircraft camouflage.
- Middle Stone was first used in the RAF Tropical Land camouflage scheme along with Light Earth following AMO A.926/40 of December 12, 1940. The lower surfaces of the aircraft under this camouflage scheme were to be painted Sky or Sky Blue.
- Later, according to AMO A.513/41 of July 10, 1941, Light Earth was to be replaced by Dark Green in the Tropical Land Scheme. This did not last long, however, as it was due to a mistake, and corrections were soon issued replacing Dark Green with Dark Earth.
- Middle Stone was also used in the RAF Desert scheme, introduced under AMO A.664/42 on July 2, 1942. This scheme involved camouflaging the upper surfaces with Dark Earth and Middle Stone, and the lower surfaces with Azure Blue (or Special Night for night operating aircraft).
- Note, however, that American aircraft delivered to the MTO under the lend-lease program (e.g., P-40, Baltimore, etc.) may have been painted directly at the factory with American 71-069 Middle Stone paint, which differs from the UK counterpart.
