MAP Dark Sea Grey Color Guide:

• MAP Dark Sea Grey was introduced into aircraft camouflage in 1939 for use in the Temperate Sea Scheme to paint the lower wings of WW2 naval biplanes along with Light Slate Grey. This was done for shadow compensation, as the upper wings were painted in the darker and more prominent colors Extra Dark Sea Grey and Dark Slate Grey respectively. The lower surfaces under this scheme were originally painted Sky Grey and from December 1940 onwards Sky Type S.
• From 1951 until the late 1960s, BS 638 Dark Sea Grey was used along with BS 641 Dark Green in the RAF Day Fighter camouflage scheme, as well as for Night Fighter camouflage. The undersides of aircraft in this scheme were painted High Speed Silver for day fighters and BS 637 Medium Sea Grey for night fighters respectively.
• BS 638 Dark Sea Grey was also used in the RAF Overseas Camouflage scheme, consisting of BS 638 Dark Sea Grey and BS 641 Dark Green over BS 636 PRU Blue. This scheme lasted from 1951 until the late 1960s.
• From 1965 until the late 1990s BS 638 Dark Sea Grey and the recently introduced BS 241 Dark Green were used for tactical camouflage of RAF aircraft. This scheme involved painting the undersides in BS 627 Light Aircraft Grey.
• Beginning in 1995, BS 638 Dark Sea Grey was used in modern RAF Tactical Grey Aircraft Camouflage to paint the upper surfaces of aircraft. Lower surfaces under this scheme were to be painted in BS 629 Dark Camouflage Grey. This scheme was discontinued in 2007 when the aircraft were completely repainted in BS 637 Medium Sea Grey.
• BS 638 Dark Sea Grey was also used to camouflage RAF maritime patrol aircraft in the 1950-1980s.
• The cockpits of Hawk trainer aircraft were painted BS 638 Dark Sea Grey, unlike other modern RAF aircraft which were usually painted BS 632 Dark Admiralty Grey.
• BS 638 Dark Sea Grey was used as the primary color of FAA Sea Harrier aircraft from 1983 to 1995. In 1995, BS 638 was replaced by BS 637 Medium Sea Grey, but the radomes remained painted BS 638 Dark Sea Grey.
• BS 638 Dark Sea Grey along with BS 637 Medium Sea Grey is used for modern FAA helicopter wrap-around camouflage. This scheme was introduced in 1982 and is still in use today.
