FS 17875 Insignia White Color Guide:

• FS 17875 Insignia White was widely used for aircraft insignia, markings, and stencils on U.S. aircraft beginning in the mid-1950s. This color replaced ANA 601 Insignia White, previously used for the same purposes.
• For camouflage purposes, FS 17875 Insignia White began to be used in 1955 to paint the undersides of US Navy and USMC aircraft, the upper surfaces were to be painted FS 36440 Light Gull Gray under this scheme. In the 1970s, FS 16440 Light Gull Gray replaced the previously used FS 36440, but the difference was mainly in the finish, and the shade remained essentially the same. Carrier-based ASW helicopters, such as the SH-3 Sea King, received an inverted version of this camouflage: the upper parts were FS 17875 and the lower ones were FS 16440. The USN and USMC used this camouflage extensively until 1980 when it was replaced by more modern tactical gray schemes.
• FS 17875 Insignia White was used to paint U.S. Navy patrol aircraft beginning in the late 1950s. The lower parts of such aircraft were painted in Sea Plane Gray FS 26081, and FS 17875 Insignia White was used to paint the upper part of the fuselage. Later, in the early 1970s, FS 26081 Sea Plane Gray was replaced by FS 16440 Light Gull Gray in this camouflage scheme.
• FS 17875 Insignia White was also applied to the camouflage of US Air Force aircraft. Beginning in the 1960s, FS 17875 Insignia White was used for aircraft painted with the SAC SIOP (Strategic Air Command Single Integrated Operational Plan) scheme, such as the B-52 and FB-111. FS 17875 Insignia White was specified for painting the undersides of the aircraft. The upper surfaces were to be painted in the multi-color pattern of SAC Bomber Tan FS 34201, SAC Bomber Green FS 34159, and Forest Green FS 34079. The SAC SEA version of this camouflage suggested painting the lower surfaces in FS 17038 Black instead of FS 17875.
• FS 17875 Insignia White was also used to paint MAC (Military Airlift Command) aircraft in the 1960s and 1980s. These aircraft were typically painted FS 16473 ADC Gray, with the undersides painted FS 17875 Insignia White.
• FS 17875 Insignia White is also used for the early camouflage scheme of American early warning and control aircraft such as the Boeing E-3 Sentry. All moving parts such as flaps, rudders, and ailerons of these aircraft were painted FS 17875 Insignia White, while the rest of the airframe was painted entirely in FS 16515 Boeing Gray. This scheme was later simplified and the airplanes were completely painted FS 16515 Boeing Gray, eliminating the white parts.
• FS 17875 Insignia White was widely used to paint the interiors, wheel wells, and bomb bays of U.S. Navy and USMC aircraft from the mid-1950s, replacing the actively used ANA 611 Interior Green. USAF aircraft also switched to FS 17875 Insignia White for painting aircraft interiors a few years later, in the 1960s. Beginning in 1985, U.S. aircraft began receiving interiors painted in the newer FS 17925 Untinted White color with a lighter and brighter shade of white, gradually displacing FS 17875.
