71-009 Dark Earth
A high-quality semi-gloss WW2 US Dark Earth acrylic or enamel paint for scale models and historical miniatures.
DuPont 71-009 Dark Earth Color Guide:
- 71-009 Dark Earth is a WWII aircraft camouflage color developed by DuPont for use on U.S. aircraft delivered to the UK and painted to British camouflage standards.
- 71-009 Dark Earth was the DuPont counterpart to the Dark Earth color used in the UK.
- 71-009 Dark Earth was used in the Temperate Land camouflage scheme. Along with 71-009 Dark Earth, this scheme called for 71-013 Dark Green, and the undersides were to be painted 71-021 Sky.
- 71-009 was a lighter version of the Dark Earth color that was used primarily at the beginning of World War II. It was significantly lighter than the original MAP Dark Earth paint and was shortly replaced by a new, closer shade 71-035 Dark Earth.
- 71-009 Dark Earth could also be used on US Air Force aircraft. Due to the entry into World War II, some of the aircraft already built and painted in the USA under military contracts were transferred to US Army Air Force units instead of being delivered to the UK.
- 71-009 Dark Earth was also used to paint US aircraft originally destined for the UK but delivered to the USSR under lend-lease, such as the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, Bell P-400 Airacobra and others. These aircraft usually retained the original US Temperate Land camouflage, and only the USAAF insignia on the upper surfaces were repainted in AMT-4 or A-24m Green in the USSR.
