FiAF Finnish Fokker

During World War II, the Finnish Air Force faced significant challenges defending its airspace against Soviet incursions. To bolster its aerial defense capabilities, Finland acquired several Dutch-built Fokker aircraft, notably the Fokker D.XXI. Additionally, Finland produced its own versions of Fokker aircraft under license at the Finnish State Aircraft Factory.

The Finnish State Aircraft Factory manufactured locally modified variants of the Fokker D.XXI, incorporating improvements tailored to Finnish specifications. These license-built Fokkers played a crucial role alongside their Dutch counterparts in defending Finnish skies during the Winter War and the Continuation War.

Despite being considered outdated compared to more modern fighters of the era, Fokker D.XXI proved to be formidable adversaries in the hands of skilled Finnish pilots. Armed with machine guns and later 20mm canons, these Fokker aircraft became mainstays of the Finnish Air Force, engaging in dogfights with Soviet aircraft over the skies of Finland.

Among the Finnish pilots who flew Fokker aircraft were Jorma Sarvanto, Viktor Pyötsiä, and Veikko Karu, renowned for their exceptional flying skills and combat prowess. These aces achieved numerous aerial victories, earning them widespread recognition and contributing significantly to the defense of Finland.

Despite facing more advanced adversaries, Finnish pilots flying Fokker aircraft demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, often outmaneuvering and outperforming their opponents in the heat of aerial combat. The simplicity, reliability, and maneuverability of Fokker D.XXI played crucial roles in Finland's successful defense efforts against overwhelming odds.

Use Guide for the Set FiAF Finnish Fokker

  • The initial Fokkers delivered to Finland retained their original Dutch paint scheme: the aircraft's upper surfaces were painted LVA Khaki, while the undersides were painted LVA Blauw accordingly.
  • After the Winter War, in 1940, a two-tone black-green camouflage scheme was introduced for Finnish aircraft, featuring Oliivin Vihreä (olive green) and Musta (black).
  • Fokker D.XXI aircraft built under license received a Finnish paint scheme with grey undersurfaces painted Hopean Harmaa. This painting was applied not only to aircraft manufactured in Finland under license but also to those undergoing maintenance and upgrades at the Finnish State Aircraft Factory. Grey undersurface paint was typical for Fokker DXXI, C.V, and C.X, Gloster Gladiator Mk. I (J8A), Morane Saulnier, as well as captured Soviet fighters Polikarpov I-15 and I-16.
  • In 1941, after the beginning of the Continuation War, yellow IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) elements, typical for Axis aircraft, were introduced for Finnish aircraft - engine cowling, fuselage band, and wingtip undersurfaces.
  • With the start of the Lapland War and Finland's switch to the side of the Allies, the yellow elements were promptly painted over.
