Light Slate Grey
A high-quality semi-gloss MAP Light Slate Grey acrylic or enamel paint for scale models and historical miniatures.
MAP Light Slate Grey Color Guide:
- MAP Light Slate Grey is a lighter shade of MAP Dark Slate Grey, designed primarily to compensate for shadows in aviation camouflage.
- Light Shale Grey has a more prominent greenish tint compared to Dark Slate Grey and rather resembles the interior Green Grey color.
- As mentioned above, Light Slate Grey was originally used for FAA and RAF Coastal Command biplanes camouflaged by the Temperate Sea Scheme. Light Slate Grey along with Dark Sea Grey was used to paint the upper surfaces of the lower wings for shadow compensation. The upper wings of aircraft painted using this scheme were traditionally finished in Dark Slate Grey and Extra Dark Sea Grey, while the undersides were painted Sky Grey, Sky, or white for anti-submarine aircraft.
- Beginning in July 1942, Light Slate Grey was also used to apply squadron codes to RAF Coastal Command anti-submarine aircraft with white undersides.
- In the 1950-1960s, BS 639 Light Slate Grey was used in camouflage for high-altitude short-range fighters and jet-powered bombers following AMO Directive A.217/51. This scheme, in addition to BS 639, also suggested the use of BS 637 Medium Sea Grey to camouflage the upper surfaces, while the lower surfaces were to be painted in BS 636 PRU Blue.
