MAP Extra Dark Sea Grey Color Guide:
- MAP Extra Dark Sea Grey is a dark bluish-gray color developed mainly for use in Navy aircraft camouflage.
- Extra Dark Sea Grey, along with Dark Slate Grey was used in the Temperate Sea Scheme, applied to RAF Coastal Command and FAA aircraft between 1939-1945. The lower surfaces under this scheme were to be painted Sky Grey or Sky.
- Extra Dark Sea Grey was also used to camouflage low-altitude RAF reconnaissance aircraft during World War II. This camouflage, in addition to Extra Dark Sea Grey, also included Extra Dark Sea Green for the upper surfaces and PRU Mauve or Deep Sky for the undersides.
- Beginning in September 1944, Extra Dark Sea Grey became the single topside color of RAF Coastal Command aircraft following AMO A.864/44.
- After World War II, the FAA also discontinued the use of Dark Slate Gray for aircraft camouflage, and the upper surfaces were to be painted entirely in BS 640 Extra Dark Sea Grey, and the lower surfaces in BS 210 Sky.
- BS 640 Extra Dark Sea Grey continued to be used from 1960-1980 to camouflage the upper surfaces of FAA aircraft, while the lower surfaces changed their color to white.
- In 1982, during the Falklands War, FAA Sea Harriers were completely repainted in BS 640 Extra Dark Sea Grey and remained in that color until a new Sea Harrier scheme was standardized, replacing BS 640 with BS 638 Dark Sea Grey.
- The German Hawker Sea Hawks and Fairey Gannets of the Marineglieger units retained the original British FAA coloring of the upper surfaces in BS 640 Extra Dark Sea Grey, while the undersides were painted in BS 210 Sky.
