FARR Hurricane Aces

During World War II, the Hawker Hurricane played a crucial role in the Romanian Air Force's operations, particularly with Escadrila 53 Vanatoare, one of the most distinguished fighter squadrons of the Romanian military at the war's outset.

Escadrila 53 Vanatoare earned its reputation during the intense Bessarabian campaign, where it achieved remarkable success. Within a mere ten days, the squadron secured an impressive tally of 32 confirmed air victories, along with an additional 3 unconfirmed victories, all accomplished without suffering any combat losses. This outstanding performance solidified the squadron's status as one of the most effective fighter units in the early stages of World War II.

The Hawker Hurricane's role in Romanian service extended far beyond the Bessarabian campaign. Throughout the war, these aircraft played a vital role in defending Romanian airspace and providing crucial air support for Axis military operations across various theaters of conflict.

The Romanian aces who flew these Hawker Hurricanes further enhanced their reputation. Pilots like Constantin Cantacuzino, Andrei Rădulescu, and Eugen Camencianu demonstrated exceptional skill and bravery, achieving notable success in combat engagements while piloting the Hawker Hurricane.

The Hawker Hurricane's contribution to Romanian air operations underscored its versatility and effectiveness as a combat aircraft. Despite Romania's eventual alignment with the Axis powers, the Hawker Hurricane remained a formidable asset, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Romanian aviation during World War II.

Use Guide for the Set FARR Hurricane Aces

  • The first 12 Hawker Hurricane aircraft delivered from the UK received the original British Temperate Land camouflage scheme of Dark Green and Dark Earth. The undersides were painted according to the UK standards as well, the left wing was Night, while the right wing was White. The rear part of the aircraft underneath was coated with Aluminum Dope.
  • In the spring of 1941, the Romanian aircraft were adorned with bright yellow IFF markings: engine cowls, the undersides of wing tips, and fuselage bands.
  • Typically, the rudders of Romanian aircraft were painted in the Romanian tricolor. However, for unknown reasons, aircraft 2, 4, and 6 from Escadrila 53 Vanatoare did not feature national markings.
  • The prop spinner was painted 1/3 yellow and 2/3 black.
