RLM 23 Rot
High-quality semi-gloss bright red acrylic or enamel paint designed for scale modeling and historical miniatures.
About RLM 23 Rot:
- RLM 23 Rot was officially introduced in 1936 with the first edition of the Luftwaffe L.Dv. 521 directive.
- Following its adoption, this color was widely used by the Luftwaffe for national markings, tactical identification elements, unit emblems, and technical stencils on aircraft.
- RLM 23 Rot was also applied to fire-extinguisher system lines on Luftwaffe aircraft throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
- Beginning in 1936, red RLM 23 was used as a unit color on fighters of JG 132 (renamed JG 131 in 1938).
- In the late 1930s, RLM 23 was used for the red fin band with the swastika on German aircraft. In 1939, shortly before the invasion of Poland, this band was painted over, leaving only the swastika with a thin white outline.
- Throughout the war, RLM 23 Rot served as a tactical marking color. It commonly appeared on propeller spinners and fuselage tactical numbers on fighters, and as Staffel-identification letters on bombers. In fighter units, red was typically used by the 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th Staffeln; in bomber units, red indicated II. Gruppe and was seen on aircraft of the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 17th Staffeln.
- Late in the war, RLM 23 Rot appeared in Reich Defense (Reichsverteidigung) fuselage bands introduced in January 1944. JG 1 "Oesau" carried a solid RLM 23 red band, and from early 1945 aircraft of JG 300 also received a red band.
- The initial single-color band system was soon replaced by mostly two-color schemes. JG 7 "Nowotny" used equal-width bands in RLM 23 Rot and RLM 24 Dunkelblau; JG 301 had red-yellow bands in RLM 23 and RLM 27 Gelb, and JG 52 applied red-white bands in RLM 23 and RLM 21 Weiß.
- JG 6 "Horst Wessel" used a Reich Defense band consisting of three equal-width stripes: red, white, and red.
- Fighter-bomber units used Reich Defense bands in a checkerboard pattern. On the aircraft of KG(J) 6, this pattern was red-black: RLM 23 Rot and RLM 22 Schwarz.
