Paint Type

RLM 24 Dunkelblau

Semi-gloss violet-blue paint available in acrylic or enamel formulation. Accurately reproduces the dark blue tone used on Luftwaffe aircraft during the Second World War.

About RLM 24 Dunkelblau:

  • RLM 24 Dunkelblau was officially introduced in 1936 under Luftwaffe directive L.Dv. 521.
  • RLM 24 was primarily used for marking oxygen system components in Luftwaffe aircraft — including oxygen cylinders, regulators, and distribution lines.
  • Beyond equipment markings, RLM 24 Dunkelblau was also employed for tactical insignia: unit emblems, propeller spinners, technical stencils, and other identification markings.
  • Starting in 1938, RLM 24 Dunkelblau served as a tactical marking color on aircraft of JG 233 (later reorganized as JG 51 in 1941).
  • Following the 1939 revision of the Luftwaffe’s tactical marking system, RLM 24 Dunkelblau, together with RLM 25 Hellgrün, was used to denote aircraft assigned to the Stab of bomber Geschwader as well as to subordinate Gruppenstab aircraft.
  • Within fighter units, blue tactical numbers identified aircraft belonging to additional Staffeln.
  • RLM 24 Dunkelblau was also used in the Reich Defense (Reichsverteidigung) fuselage band system introduced in early 1944.
  • Aircraft of JG 54 “Grünherz” carried a solid dark blue fuselage band.
  • Fighter aircraft of JG 7 “Nowotny” displayed Reich Defense bands in two colors — blue (RLM 24 Dunkelblau) and red (RLM 23 Rot).
  • The three-band combination — two blue stripes with a central white band in RLM 21 Weiß — was applied to aircraft of JG 300.
  • Fighter-bomber aircraft of KG (J) 54 “Totenkopf” carried a chequered fuselage band painted in alternating RLM 24 Dunkelblau and RLM 21 Weiß squares.
