RLM 62 Green Color Guide:

  • RLM 62 Green was put into use in 1936 in accordance with L.Dv. 521.
  • The realities of the Spanish Civil War demonstrated the ineffectiveness of the Luftwaffe's all-gray or silver paint scheme. On top of the gray bomber paint DKH L40/52 Grau or RLM 63 Hellgrau used by fighters, a temporary camouflage consisting of RLM 62 Green patches of irregular shape could be painted over the standard gray color until the introduction of the 3-color official camouflage standard.
  • In 1936, a three-color splinter camouflage was approved, consisting of RLM 63 Hellgrau, RLM 62 Grün and RLM 61 Dunkelbraun. The lower surfaces were to be painted in light blue RLM 65 Hellblau.
  • A year later, in 1937, a completely new 2-color green camouflage was approved to replace the 3-color scheme, which eliminated the use of RLM 62 Green for Luftwaffe aircraft. However, some units continued to use the old 3-color camouflage even during the Polish and French campaigns of World War II.
  • RLM 62 Grün was also used to paint Wehrmacht armored vehicles. In February 1943, the A.H.M. directive, Blatt 5, No. 181, instituted a new multi-color camouflage for armored vehicles to replace the old dark gray camouflage. The new scheme called for coloring in sandy Dunkelgelgelb nach Muster with irregular spots of Rotbraun Nr. 19 and aviation RLM 62 Grün. This temporary camouflage was used for painting vehicles at the factory until April 1943, when a new permanent scheme was officially approved. In this new scheme, RLM 62 Grün was replaced by a new color RAL 6003 Olivgrün specially designed for armored vehicles.
