Tupolev TB-3 Chinese Air Force Heavy Bomber
During the 1930s, the TB-3 constituted the backbone of the Soviet long-range bombing fleet, bearing the primary weight of strategic missions in the pre-war era. Developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau between 1925 and 1930, this aircraft secured its place in history as the world’s first all-metal, four-engine monoplane heavy bomber.
Throughout its production run from 1932 to 1938, the Soviet aviation industry delivered 819 units across four combat variants and two civilian modifications.
In August 1937, the Soviet government authorized military assistance to China to counter Japanese expansion, with the TB-3 included in the equipment transfer. Within the Chinese Air Force, these aircraft were utilized extensively for both bombing missions and strategic military transport. A defining moment of their service in this theater was the raid on May 20, 1938, when six bombers conducted a sortie over Japanese territory to drop one million propaganda leaflets.
