Avro Anson Mk.I British WWII Multi-Role Aircraft

The Avro Anson was one of the first monoplanes to enter service with the RAF. Originally designed for general reconnaissance, the aircraft was considered almost obsolescent by the outbreak of war in 1939. Nevertheless, it formed the backbone of Coastal Command until its replacement in 1941. Following withdrawal from frontline duties, the type saw extensive service in crew training and communications.

The aircraft depicted on the box art of this kit represents a typical early-war Anson. Operated by No. 217 Squadron RAF and flown by an all-Dutch volunteer crew, it bears the distinctive orange triangular fin markings utilized by Dutch aircraft.

Powered by twin 350 hp Armstrong-Siddeley Cheetah engines, the Anson I achieved a maximum speed of 188 mph with an operational range of approximately 750 miles. Its maximum bomb load of 360 lbs. consisted of two 100 lb. bombs stowed in the center section, alongside up to eight 20 lb. bombs. The wingspan was 56 ft. 6 in., with an overall length of 42 ft. 3 in.
