FS 36231 Dark Gull Gray Color Guide:
- FS 36231 Dark Gull Gray was widely used for interior and cockpit paint from the mid-1950s to the present for all US military aircraft - US Navy, USMC, and US Air Force. This color replaced the ANA 611 Interior Green color used in the late WWII and post-war period.
- FS 36231 Dark Gull Gray in addition to interior painting was also involved in aircraft camouflage. It was widely used in various US adversary aircraft camouflages.
- Probably the earliest use of FS 36231 Dark Gull Gray as a camouflage color was for use in Ferris camouflage for US Navy aircraft. This scheme was introduced in 1976 and involved applying FS 36440 Light Gull Gray camouflage patches to the lower surfaces and sides of the fuselage. FS 36231 Dark Gull Gray was to be used to camouflage the upper surfaces as well as the fuselage sides. FS 36118 Medium Gunship Gray was to be applied to the upper surfaces.
- FS 36231 Dark Gull Gray was used in the wraparound camouflage of USMC Harrier aircraft during the Gulf War. Along with FS 36231, this scheme called for the use of FS 36118 Medium Gunship Gray for darker camouflage patches.
- FS 36231 Dark Gull Gray was used in a later version of the Harrier Tactical Paint Scheme (HTPS), introduced in 1992. According to this scheme, FS 36231 Dark Gull Gray was used to paint the sides of the fuselage, the upper surfaces were to be painted FS 36118 Medium Gunship Gray, and the lower ones FS 36320 Dark Ghost Gray. This scheme lasted until 2014 when the Harriers received a new simplified camouflage: the upper surfaces were painted entirely in FS 36118 and the undersides in FS 35237 Blue Gray.
