FiAF Continuation War

In the early years of World War II, Finland once again found itself in conflict with the Soviet Union. The Continuation War began in 1941, prompting the Finnish Air Force to deploy a formidable fleet of aircraft to safeguard its sovereignty. Operating a mix of domestically produced and acquired planes, Finland faced the Soviet aerial threat with determination and skill.

Among the notable aircraft in the Finnish arsenal during this period was the Brewster B-239 Buffalo. Despite facing challenges elsewhere in World War II, the Finnish Air Force achieved success with this aircraft. Finnish pilots exhibited exceptional skill, securing significant victories against numerically superior Soviet forces.

A pivotal moment occurred during the Battle of Ilomantsi in 1944. While primarily a ground battle, the Finnish Air Force's air support played a crucial role in the region's defense. Engaging in intense dogfights over the battlefront, aircraft such as the Brewster Buffalos and Messerschmitt Bf 109G showcased the adaptability of the Finnish Air Force.

Finnish ace pilots emerged as heroes during this conflict, demonstrating unparalleled courage and skill in the face of adversity. Ilmari Juutilainen, the top-scoring Finnish ace of World War II, achieved numerous victories during the Continuation War, solidifying his reputation as one of the finest pilots of the era. Other notable aces, such as Hans Wind and Eino Luukkanen, also made significant contributions to the success of the Finnish Air Force.

As the Continuation War progressed, the conflict eventually transformed into the Lapland War against Finland's former German allies. The Finnish Air Force's legacy of adaptability, innovation, and effective utilization of diverse aircraft continues to be celebrated. It stands as a testament to Finland's resilience and determination during this challenging period in history.

To strengthen its air power, Finland welcomed international volunteers drawn to the cause. Notable among them were the Swedish Volunteer Corps, who fought alongside Finnish forces. This international support added a symbolic and cooperative dimension to Finland's defense efforts. The Continuation War, marked by battles such as Ilomantsi and Tali-Ihantala, showcased Finland's strategic acumen and the diverse contributions of its air force, including aircraft sourced from various nations.

Use Guide for the Set FiAF Continuation War:

  • After the end of the Winter War, a new aircraft camouflage scheme was introduced. The upper surfaces were now to be camouflaged in olive green and black. The coloring of the lower surfaces remained unchanged. Depending on the aircraft, it was light gray or silver.
  • In 1942, as part of paint standardization, Finnish aircraft were given a new light blue uniform coloring of the lower surfaces.
  • In winter, the Finns used a special camouflage scheme for aircraft in the snowy terrain. White distemper was applied to the black patches on the upper surfaces of the aircraft.
  • With the outbreak of war, Finnish aircraft were given bright yellow ID elements such as engine cowls, wingtips, and fuselage stripes. These yellow Axis IDs were immediately removed when Finland went up against Germany in the Lapland War.
