• In 1938, the RAF introduced the Temperate Land camouflage scheme, which involved using Dark Green and Dark Earth colors for British aircraft. To prevent friendly fire, the undersides were brightly painted: the port side had a Night color, while the starboard had White.
• Biplanes received additional camouflage on their lower wings, according to the so-called Shadow Compensation scheme. It was believed that the shadow from the upper wings of the biplane would darken the lighter camouflage of the lower wings, equalizing the colors. Thus, the aircraft would be less noticeable due to the reduced contrast from the falling shadow.
• According to the Shadow Compensation scheme, RAF biplanes were given a 4-color camouflage. In addition to the standard Dark Green and Dark Earth on the upper surfaces, the lower wings and fuselage side surfaces were to be painted Light Green and Light Earth, respectively.
• The Shadow Compensation scheme was abolished in late 1940, and the lower wings of RAF biplanes received the standard Temperate Land camouflage colors: Dark Green and Dark Earth.
