Paint Set 7010: Ukrainian Air Force – Ghost of Kyiv

After the outbreak of hostilities in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force began modernizing its aircraft fleet. One major step was the introduction of a gray digital camouflage scheme, developed as an alternative to Soviet-era patterns and fundamentally different from Russian and other post-Soviet designs. The first aircraft to receive the new camouflage was the MiG-29, during overhaul and modernization at the Lviv State Aircraft Repair Plant. Later, the Su-24, Su-25, and training L-39 Albatros aircraft were also repainted in this scheme.
The Ghost of Kyiv
After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a story about the “Ghost of Kyiv” spread through the media — a Ukrainian pilot who reportedly shot down at least six enemy aircraft in the first days of the conflict. Later reports mentioned 10 and even 21 kills. Although the Ukrainian Air Force later clarified that the "Ghost" was a collective image honoring the pilots of the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, the legend had already taken hold. Videos and photos often showed MiG-29s in the gray digital camouflage scheme — exactly the appearance the brigade’s fighters had while engaging Russian aircraft over Kyiv. This livery quickly became closely associated with the Ghost of Kyiv, both in the media and across social networks.
Gray Digital Camouflage of the Ukrainian Air Force
The digital camouflage was developed to reduce the visual signature of aircraft in modern combat conditions — especially over industrial cities, metropolitan areas, and critical infrastructure zones. The pixelated pattern was designed to break up the aircraft’s outlines, making detection from both air and ground much more difficult. The color scheme was specifically adapted for the environment of the Donbas region, where most of the fighting occurred in industrial and densely built-up areas.
