RLM 04 Gelb
Semi-gloss golden-yellow paint accurately matched to the original Luftwaffe color standard. Ideal for WWII aircraft models requiring historically correct finishes. Available in both acrylic and enamel types.
About RLM 04 Gelb:
- Introduced in 1936 under Luftwaffe directive L.Dv. 521, RLM 04 Gelb became the standard golden-yellow tone used for markings and identification.
- First applied to aircraft of JG 234 “Schlageter” (later II./JG 132), the color was employed for tactical numbers, stenciling, unit insignia, and various recognition elements.
- Yellow was used in the Luftwaffe tactical marking system. In fighter units, aircraft of the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th Staffeln were marked in yellow. In bomber units, yellow indicated assignment to III. Gruppe, and aircraft of the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, and 15th Staffeln carried yellow Staffel identification letters in their tactical fuselage codes. These aircraft typically also had propeller spinners fully or partially painted in RLM 04 Gelb.
- During the Battle of Britain and the Balkan Campaign it served as rapid recognition markings on engine cowlings, under-wing tips and rudders.
- On the Eastern Front the same practice continued—lower cowlings, wing-tip undersides and fuselage bands were often painted in this tone.
- By 1942 the shade was gradually replaced by the brighter RLM 27 Gelb, though remnants of RLM 04 remained in use into 1943.
