RLM 22 Black Color Guide:

  • RLM 22 Schwarz was adopted into service in 1936 with the initial issue of L.Dv. 521.
  • RLM 22 Black was widely used for technical markings, stencils, tactical markings, emblems, and national identifications on Luftwaffe aircraft in the 1930s and 1940s.
  • Luftwaffe aircraft operating night missions usually had the undersides painted in RLM 22 Schwarz or were painted black all over.
  • RLM 22 Schwarz was used to paint the aircraft wheel rims according to official German standards.
  • RLM 22 Black was used as the ID color of JG 131 "Richthofen" during the interwar period.
  • RLM 22 Schwarz was widely used for "Reichsverteidigung" (Reich Defense) identification tail bands during the final phase of World War II. The all-black bands were used by JG 53 "Pik-As". The two-color bands consisting of RLM 22 Black and RLM 21 Weiß were carried by JG 26 "Schlageter" aircraft, and RLM 22 Schwarz / RLM 27 Gelb by JG 5 "Eismeer" aircraft, respectively. The checkered two-color bands of RLM 22 Black and RLM 23 Red were used by the fighter-bomber squadron KG(J) 6. The tail band consisting of 3 stripes of equal width RLM 22 Schwarz/ RLM 21 Schwarz/ RLM 21 Weiß was applied to aircraft from JG 4.
