Ve snaze ochromit německou logistiku během bitvy v Ardenách vyslala 8. letecká armáda USA 2 034 těžkých bombardérů B-17 a B-24 s doprovodem bezmála tisíce stíhaček. Letecká válka se definitivně přesunula na oblohu nad samotnou Říší.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePři zachycování takto masivních armád, kdy současně startovaly celé stíhací eskadry, bylo pro piloty po útoku nesmírně obtížné znovu zformovat své letky. Letci z JG 1 se pokusili tento problém vyřešit jako jedni z prvních a zavedli na svých letounech Fw 190 nápadné šachovnicové a pruhované kryty motorů. Od této iniciativy se však rychle upustilo.
