About RLM 22 Schwarz:

  • RLM 22 Schwarz was introduced in the first edition of directive L.Dv. 521 (1936).
  • The black RLM 22 paint was widely used for technical stencils, tactical markings, emblems, and identification symbols on Luftwaffe aircraft during the 1930s–1940s.
  • According to German technical standards, aircraft wheel hubs were painted in RLM 22 Schwarz. Because these parts were rarely repainted even during camouflage revisions, this color was retained on most aircraft later delivered to Germany’s allies — Spain, Finland, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Croatia, and Bulgaria.
  • RLM 22 Schwarz was used as the tactical identification colour of JG 131 “Richthofen” in the interwar period.
  • Luftwaffe aircraft mostly assigned to night missions — fighters as well as bombers — had their undersurfaces painted in black RLM 22. Some aircraft, especially early-war night fighters, were painted overall in RLM 22 Schwarz.
  • Toward the end of World War II, RLM 22 Schwarz was used for Reichsverteidigung (“Reich Defense”) fuselage bands that served for quick tactical identification of aircraft.
  • JG 53 “Pik-As” aircraft carried a solid black RLM 22 fuselage band.
  • Two-colour Reich Defense bands of RLM 22 Schwarz and RLM 21 Weiß were applied on JG 26 “Schlageter” aircraft, while the black-and-yellow combination — RLM 22 Schwarz with RLM 27 Gelb — was used on JG 5 “Eismeer.”
  • On JG 4 aircraft the Reich Defense band consisted of three stripes of equal width: black RLM 22 on the outer edges and white RLM 21 in the centre.
  • Fighter-bomber units used Reich Defense bands in a checkerboard pattern. On the aircraft of KG(J) 6, this pattern was red and black, with RLM 22 Schwarz and RLM 23 Rot.
