RLM 21 Weiß
A premium semi-gloss acrylic or enamel paint in a soft, cream-tinted white tone. Developed specifically for historical and scale modeling accuracy.
About RLM 21 Weiß:
- RLM 21 Weiß was standardized in 1936 under directive L.Dv. 521 issued by the German Air Ministry.
- This shade of white saw extensive service within the Luftwaffe, appearing on aircraft markings ranging from maintenance stencils and tactical codes to unit insignia and national crosses.
- During the winter campaign of 1941–42, a washable distemper version of RLM 21 was applied as temporary winter camouflage to help aircraft blend with snow-covered terrain. By the winter of 1944–45, such applications had become rare and limited to a few units.
- Between 1941 and 1943, aircraft operating in North Africa and the MTO — both Luftwaffe and other Axis aircraft — often carried white RLM 21 identification markings on wing tips, engine cowlings, and fuselage bands for IFF purposes.
- Within the Luftwaffe tactical marking system, RLM 21 Weiß served as one of the standard identification colors. In fighter units, white tactical numbers were carried by aircraft assigned to the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th Staffeln. Bomber units used white to denote aircraft belonging to I. Gruppe, with white Staffel letters applied to machines of the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, and 13th Staffeln. Propeller spinners on these aircraft were likewise commonly finished in RLM 21 Weiß.
- During Operation Bodenplatte, RLM 21 Weiß was used for Reichsverteidigung (Reich Defense) fuselage bands identifying fighter wings: JG 3 “Udet” — solid white; JG 52 — white–red with RLM 23 Rot; JG 26 “Schlageter” — white–black with RLM 22 Schwarz; JG 77 “Herz As” — white–green with RLM 25 Hellgrün.
- Several Jagdgeschwader adopted distinctive triband fuselage markings with RLM 21 Weiß as the center stripe: JG 6 “Horst Wessel” — red-white-red; JG 4 — black-white-black; JG 51 “Mölders” — green-white-green; JG 2 “Richthofen” — yellow-white-yellow with RLM 27 Gelb; JG 300 — blue-white-blue with RLM 24 Dunkelblau.
- Checkerboard fuselage bands were used mainly on fighter-bomber units. Aircraft of KG(J) 27 “Boelcke” carried white–green patterns, while those of KG(J) 54 “Totenkopf” carried white–blue.
